New Whiskey Pays Tribute to Hillary Clinton
Republic Restoratives, a distillery based in Washington D.C., is set to launch the Rodham Rye—a new line of whiskey named after Hillary Rodham Clinton. Originally intended to celebrate America’s first woman president, Rodham Rye will now be a “tribute to women in history, and a tribute to women in our everyday lives,” as stated by Pia Carusone.
Carusone has worked for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, prior to campaigning for Clinton. She owns the distillery along with Rachel Gardner.
Rodham Rye is a blend of sourced one-year-old and three-and-a-half-year-old ryes from Tennessee. The water in the blend is from a spring in the Adirondack Mountain in upstate New York, on a maple syrup farm owned by Gardner’s family for generations. This is a symbolic link, given Clinton’s former post as a New York senator.
Scheduled for public release on March 25, Rodham Rye is priced at a relatively steep $79. Five per cent of sales from the batch of 4,652 bottles will be donated to EMILY’s List. This is an organization that champions pro-choice rights for women, and assists female Democratic candidates.
So far, distillers have planned sales for a limited season. However, a possibility of revival in the future has not been ruled out.
