JOHNNIE WALKER LAUNCHES BLADE RUNNER WHISKY
The Johnnie Walker label is synonymous with some of the world’s finest Scotch whisky. Originating in 15th century Scotland, the distillery was soon taken over by John Walker who wanted to provide a consistent-tasting whisky with his skilled blending and the rest, as they say, is history.
Blending is a skill and draws similarities to making a movie which equally involves the right mix of specialised skill-sets for an outstanding outcome. Johnny Walker whisky’s collaborated with film director Denis Villeneuve to launch a limited-edition Blade Runner whisky, as homage to the whisky’s appearance in the 1982 movie.
The Johnnie Walker label had been the star in the original Blade Runner movie. This golden spirit has returned in the Blade Runner 2049 movie sequel which premiered in October 2017, and pays tribute to the still growing demand for this whisky.
This special edition of the elixir adds to its already luxurious repertoire besides being a promotional tie-up for the movie sequel. However, this time around the fans will also have an option to have the futuristic bottle as a memoir forever. A combination of more than 30 single malt and grain whiskies with the Johnnie Walker blending style lends it a strong and smoky flavour profile, which is bottled at 49% ABV as a hat tip to 2049.
The movie director, Denis Villeneuve said, “Like many fans, I remember the Johnnie Walker bottle from the first film, so it was a unique privilege to collaborate with Johnnie Walker on designing a totally original, custom bottle for the new movie”. He further added, “It was also a once-in-a-lifetime experience to help create the limited edition Black Label The Director's Cut blend, which perfectly captures the complex and mysterious world of Blade Runner 2049."
Priced at £68 (US$90), and with only 39,000 bottles available across 15 markets globally, this contemporary whisky with its distinct characteristic is truly emerging as the whisky of the future.
