Not only are Cherries totally delicious fruits that you can eat as much as you like, they are packed with nutrients and have an endless culinary potential. This potential is simply waiting to be harnessed, and so many delicious goodies have come out it. Jams, sauces, slushees, pulps and juices are just some of the most generic applications of Cherries.
Sometime in the past, it was perhaps a genius to have discovered just how well Cherries mingled with whiskies to create some astonishing flavours. Cherries are often even used as garnish in many classic and modern cocktails, most notably the Classic Old Fashioned which used a Maraschino cherry for garnish. Now since Cherries are abundantly available this season, it is only obvious for us to harness its many possibilities by making ourselves some cherry flavoured cocktails. Cherry Whiskey Smash
A tasty and unique spin on a timeless whisky cocktail, the Cherry Whiskey Smash makes the best out of the sweetness of cherries by combining it with whiskey and lemon juice. The sweet, tarty flavours blend perfectly with the sourness of the lemon juice, and Jameson Irish whiskey really just completes things.
Smooth, citrusy and slightly floral, Jameson Irish whiskey is a phenomenal choice for this cherry cocktail. To be honest, Jameson is already the whiskey of choice for pretty much any whiskey cocktail that you could think of because it is simply too good. With the Cherry Whiskey Smash you can make the most out of this delicious fruit which works marvellously even as a garnish for many a whisky cocktail.
So what ingredients shall you need to make yourself a Cherry Whiskey Smash? Let’s find out;
Jameson Irish whiskey – 60 ML Cherry Juice – 30 ML Sugar Syrup – 1 Tbsp Cherry fruits– 3 pc (without the pit) Lemon Wedge – 1 pc Mint Leaves – 7-8 leaves
Preparation for the Cherry Whiskey Smash;
Step 1: Add the half the mint leaves, 2 cherries, lemon wedge, sugar syrup and cherry juice to a cocktail shaker. Muddle the ingredients gently.
Step 2: Proceed to add the Jameson Irish whiskey to the shaker, and add lots of ice.
Step 3: Shake well, and strain into a Lowball glass filled with ice.
Step 4: Garnish with the remaining cherry, and a few mint leaves.
In four easy steps, and without all the expensive bar tools, your Cherry Whisky Smash is ready to be devoured.
Classic Old Fashioned
We know what you are thinking right now, and that is, “There are no cherries in a Classic Old Fashioned!” But you might be forgetting the fact that Maraschino cherries have been used to garnish Old Fashioned cocktails since times immemorial. It is true that the iteration of this cocktail with an orange peel is more popular, but we strongly recommend trying this one!
The Classic Old Fashioned has all the qualities one might look for in a cocktail that people end finishing within minutes, and that is – quick, simple and without a whole lot of expensive and complicated ingredients. We can guarantee one thing for all our readers – you will be making a lot of these if you try just one. The ingredients you will need in order to make yourself a Classic Old Fashioned are as follows;
Angostura Bitters – 2 dashes Sugar Cube – 1 pc Maraschino Cherry – 1 pc Water – 1 Tsp
Step 1: Place the sugar cube into a Lowball glass, then add the water and bitters into it.
Step 2: Muddle the ingredients until the sugar is dissolved, then add the ice cubes, and Ballantine’s Finest whisky to it.
Step 3: Stir the concoction until chilled, then garnish with a Maraschino Cherry.

Rock N’ Cola
You might already be fascinated by the name of this amazing whisky and cherry cocktail, but we can say with absolute certainty that when you hear the rest, you will be even more surprised. The Rock N’ Cola is one of the proprietary whisky cocktails from the house of Ballantine’s, and it is GOOD.
The Cherry fruit is the real star of whisky cocktail, unlike our previous recommendation wherein Cherry only plays a cameo towards the end. This cherry cocktail really leans into the Cherry flavour, and with the sweet, creamy taste of Ballantine’s Finest is quite frankly, heavenly.
Here are all the ingredients you will need for the Rock N’ Cola;
Ballantine’s Finest Scotch whisky – 90 ML Cherry Syrup – 50 ML Crushed Ice – 3 full cups Maraschino Cherry – 16 pcs Cola – 1 Cup
Let’s get started with making this delightful cherry flavoured whisky cocktail;
Step 1: Combine the crushed ice, Cherry syrup and 12 Cherries by blending them until a liquid is formed.
Step 2: Fill up four glasses with this mixture by dividing it equally.
Step 3: Now add the Ballantine’s Finest Scotch whisky into the glasses, and then top the glasses with cola until full.
Step 4: The iced slush of Cherry syrup and fruit will rise to the top in a few seconds, whereupon you can garnish the four glasses with the four leftover Maraschino Cherries
Within a few minutes, the Rock N’ Cola cherry cocktail will be ready to be served.
Charred Cherry Whiskey Lemonade
It may sound a little odd, but the way charring accentuates the flavour of the whisky and the Cherries is something you may have never expected to taste. The sweet, tart-y lip smacking goodness with a hint of smoke really puts a great spin, creating something new that surprises our mouths and minds alike.
The original recipe for the Charred Cherry Whiskey Lemonade, although you can opt for a quality Indian whisky with some smoky notes. Our recommendation would be Blenders Pride Rare Premium. This Indian whisky is very famous for its smooth flavours and gentle smoky notes, and would make for an ideal base spirit for this Cherry cocktail we are about to prepare ourselves.
If you are concerned about the ingredients upon hearing the word ‘charred’, you needn’t worry. First we shall find out all the ingredients we need to prepare it, so that we can later explore the part where we char these Cherries.
Blenders Pride whisky – 60 ML Sugar Syrup – 30 ML Lemon Juice – 60 ML Pitted Cherries – 5-6 pcs Club Soda – To fill Mint Leaves – 3-4 pcs
Now we shall go through the slightly complicated process to make our Charred Cherry Whisky Cocktail;
Step 1: Let us begin by learning how to char the Cherries for our whisky cocktail. Cook all the pitted Cherries on a dry, hot skillet or pan for around 3-4 minutes until black spots begin to appear on them. The spots will become softened, and when they do, the Cherries shall be ready to use. Take them off the skillet, or pan and allow them to cool.
Step 2: Once your Cherries have cooled down, add them to a Lowball glass with the sugar syrup. Save 1 Cherry in order to garnish your drink in the end.
Step 3: Muddle them until a pulp has formed, whereupon you can proceed to add Blenders Pride whisky, lemon juice and a few cubes of ice. Stir this until the pulp, whisky and lemon juice are mixed well, and cold.
Step 4: Now top the mixture with club soda, then gently stir the mixture again for a few seconds.
Step 5: Garnish the drink with a few mint leaves, and the one charred Cherry we saved.
