15TH CENTURY PUB REOPENS AFTER 2016 DECEMBER FIRE
A 15th century pub called Scotch Piper, Merseyside's very own slice of history, is all set for a big return this April. The local favorite has clearly withstood the test of time. Its authentic ales had once featured in CAMRA’s 2015 Good Beer Guide and earned the title of Liverpool’s Community Pub of the Year. However, in December last year, fate threw a wrench in the works as its century-old thatched roof went up in flames. In an effort to put out the blaze, the property had to be flooded with water, damage that turned out to be almost irreparable.
After three months of hard work—and a hefty £140,000 investment by the Admiral Taverns brewery— Scotch Piper will now be picking up from where it left off. And just in time for 2017’s Grand National, an iconic Liverpool event that draws a crowd across the country’s many watering holes.
One of the new licensees, Jamie Green plans to add a modern spin, while keeping the pub’s traditional charm intact. A former commercial pilot, he commented, “We are delighted to have been able to get the Scotch Piper restored and open and we are very much looking forward to welcoming customers old and new.”
Jamie and his co-licensee Colin Rimmer also plan to source exactly the same furniture as before and rebuild the thatch roof anew. “It is a fantastic community pub dating back to the 15th century and we’re proud to be remaining true to that heritage,” added Admiral Taverns member Andy Clifford.
A true testament to the strong community fabric, locals had flooded the pub team with messages of support. Tom Jones, the Admiral Tavern manager responsible for development in the neighborhood, remarked, “We’d like to especially thank those who are helping Jamie and Colin apply the finishing touches.”
