Whiskey-Glazed Goodness: Bourbon Sweet Potatoes

If bourbon reminds you of the Wild West and dusty bars, then there’s a reason for it. Bourbon is very American in its essence.  In fact, this quintessential amber-hued whiskey is recognised by the Congress as ‘America’s Native Spirit’.  This versatile, full-bodied whiskey with its warm and woody richness and hints of rich caramel, vanilla has a smoky, sweet nose.  The smoothness and complexities of bourbon makes it a perfect and preferred choice not only for cocktail mixes but for delectable appetisers too.

Bourbon! And sweet potatoes! What more can we say? No better appetiser than sweet potatoes to match the flavour profile of the robust bourbon whiskey! This holiday season raise a toast with the warm goodness of whisky. Add a splash of bourbon whiskey to your sweet potatoes and turn a plain Jane into a diva in minutes. Or, enjoy bourbon-flavoured sweet potatoes as a delectable side with your roasted turkey. This is sure to be a great finger food all in all for any occasion. Here is how:

  • 1.5 kg of sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons of your favourite bourbon whiskey
  • 3 tablespoons butter at room temperature Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • Ovenproof baking dish

The Process

Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into thick 1-inch wedges. Combine the brown sugar and bourbon.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C and butter the oven proof dish.

Line the sweet potato wedges on the baking dish and baste the sweet potatoes with the brown sugar and bourbon mix, giving it a good toss.

Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Bake for approximately 1-1/2 hours or until the sweet potatoes are tender with a gorgeous glaze.

Do toss every ½ hour or so during the baking process. Add a dollop of butter before serving this baked goodness.
