This summery whiskey cocktail is made using ginger, lime and orange blossom, all of which are popularly used in tropical regions. The drink exudes a sweet and fruity aroma with hints of spice and faded notes of the rye whisky at the base. It is best served chilled, however different variants are available if you wish to experiment. For instance, you can use different tropical flavours such as pineapple-water or apple blossom; instead of using lime juice one can use lemon barley for a more mellowed taste.

There are many delicious appetizers that go along with the Nellie Kuh. One famous dish is the Tropical Chicken Slaw with creamy pineapple vinaigrette. The combination is a sure shot crowd pleaser.


  • Rye whiskey – 75ml
  • Fresh lime juice – 30ml
  • Ginger syrup – 15 ml
  • Orange blossom water – 1/4th teaspoon
  • Finely chopped crystallized ginger – 1tablespoon
  • Sugar – 1 tablespoon
  • Lime wedge

The Process

Combine the chopped crystallized ginger and sugar on a small plate and then rub between your fingers to make it as fine as possible. This helps the ginger stick to the rim.

Rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and dip the rim into the ginger mixture to coat.

Combine the whiskey, lime juice, ginger syrup, and orange blossom water in a cocktail shaker.

Fill the shaker with ice and shake for about 30 seconds, until it gets frosty from the outside.

Strain into prepared glass, sit back, and sip on the summery goodness!
