Rittenhouse Straight Rye

(0)

The Rittenhouse Straight Rye whiskey is a non-age-statement straight rye produced in the traditional Pennsylvania or “Monongahela” style. Even though this straight rye has Pennsylvanian roots, it has a low rye mash bill which is a trait of Kentucky whiskeys.

It was named after Philadelphia’s famous Rittenhouse Square. The whiskey is a product of the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. The Rittenhouse Straight rye is bottled in bond, meaning it is made in a single season in a single year in one single distillery.

History of The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Years Whisky

After the Prohibition Act of the United States was abolished in 1933, a group of investors founded the Old Heaven Hill Springs Distillery in 1935, just outside of Bardstown, Kentucky. This distillery was built on land owned by William Heavenhill, and that’s how the distillery got its name. The first barrels were filled in 1935, and four years later, in 1935, the Heaven Hill distillery launched its first whiskey.

On 7th November 1996, a huge fire destroyed the distillery and seven rick houses, which are storage area for barrels. Lightning was suspected to cause the fire, but it was never proven. The distillery lost about 92,000 gallons of whiskey and around 15% of their storage space. The distillery returned to business as normal the next day and over the next several years, competitors and other companies helped the Old Heaven Hill Springs distillery continue its production.

As the distillery continued recovering, the owners decided to purchase the Bernheim Distillery and the current facility is now called the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery.

Making Process of Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey

The Rittenhouse Straight Rye is made of a rye, corn, and malted barley mash bill. The milled grains are cooked in small batches with water that has been filtered through limestone, to create a porridge-like “mash”. A portion of the prior day's distillate is then added to both the mash cooker and the fermenter.

Heaven Hill’s proprietary yeast strain is added to the cooked mash and this converts the sugars into alcohol. Over several days, the fermenting mash bubbles and creates a thick liquid called the "Distiller's Beer."

The Distiller's Beer drips slowly down the column stills through a series of perforated copper plates and steam blasts up from the bottom of the stills. The alcohol vapors rise to the top of the stills where they're captured and then condensed into liquid alcohol again.

The alcohol is transferred to a barrel and sealed and placed in open-rick warehouses to naturally age. The Rittenhouse Straight Rye is aged for four years.

Alcohol Percentage in Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whiskey

The Rittenhouse Straight Rye contains 50% ABV (100 US Proof), which is much higher than the standard permissible limit for Kentucky whiskeys.
