Black Dog Whisky History
Black Dog Scotch Whisky was founded in 1883 in Scotland, where it was first blended by James MacKinlay, who was a second generation blender from the Leith-based family. He crafted this whisky on order for Herbert Musgave Phipson, owner of Phipson and Co. Wine Merchants from Bombay (Mumbai). The brand was called Millard Black Dog, named after Walter Samuel Millard, a 19-year-old British employee of Phipson – who called it ‘Black Dog’ after his favorite salmon fishing fly with the same name.
McDowell & Co (now called as USL) and United Distillers created India's first joint venture in the alcoholic beverages industry, forming United Distillers India Limited in 1992, It began bottling operations in Nashik to produce Black Dog for the Indian market.
Black Dog Scotch Marketing
USL has used jazz music events as a platform to promote Black Dog in India. A Black Dog "Jazz Incident" was held in Mumbai on 22 February 2008. They also held a series of jazz concerts "The Black Dog Jazz Series" in which there was one concert featuring The Curtis King Band. The band also performed at Black Dog "Jazz Incident" held in Gurgaon, Haryana on 28 February 2008.
In 2008, the company held a 10-city concert tour by Stephen Kabakos, beginning in Delhi on 8 May as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Black Dog. It included shows in Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Mysore,Bangalore, Goa and Pune. In 2013,
The Westin Gurgaon, New Delhi threw a celebration dinner to celebrate Black Dog's 130th anniversary.
